SUPL 001: How To Be A Successful Entrepreneur in 8 Steps

Share

Running a business could get overwhelming at times, so a few days ago I decided to pamper myself and went to my favorite coffee shop in Alexandria, Roastry Coffee Shop. A group of four ladies was sitting on the table next to mine and I accidentally (I wasn’t intending, I swear!)  overheard them talking about how much they wish they could just quit their day job and start their own business. One of them was a stay at home mom, and she said a sentence that really struck a chord with me; “I just don’t want to get another job for the sake of getting back into the workforce. I don’t want to work my bun out, get stressed, exhausted and overwhelmed to get paid pennies…not worth it!”. They all nodded in agreement.

“Oh you know what? We should start a business!” she continues enthusiastically and everyone’s eyes started to sparkle with excitement.

I smiled, felt butterflies in my stomach just like I normally do when I am coming up with a new project, and an internal monologue started. It is going to be confetti and unicorns brainstorming business ideas, but when it comes to implementing phase, it won’t always be rosy as most women in business already know. Then, I started wondering if they know what it takes mentally to be a successful entrepreneur.

Business books and university programs emphasize on the concept of “A well-planned business idea is a winning one”, which is true, however becoming a successful entrepreneur and a business person starts with having the right mindset.

If you don’t cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset, you will always find a reason “or ten” that will stop you from pursuing your dreams, most of them are psychological reasons coming from your subconscious mind.

8 Essential entrepreneurial mindsets you need to acquire to become a successful entrepreneur:

  1. Have faith in yourself, your capabilities and your product.

If you don’t believe in yourself and your product/service you will communicate that while presenting it. How would you expect people to perceive your product?

Develop that belief in yourself and have confidence on what you present to the market and your customers will trust your product/service accordingly.

  2. Arrest your negative thoughts and replace them with positive supportive ones.
Challenge all thoughts that label you negatively. For example; you are a loser or you are not good enough, and replace them with positive thoughts such as “you are good enough, you can do it, and you have what it needs.”
  3. Create a vision board for your future in the business world.
Have a clear vision about your future, use your imagination to visualize yourself after a couple of years: What you want to achieve? Where you want to be?, How you want to see yourself? Put as many details as possible to make it specific. Write it down and hang it where you can revisit it from time to time.
  4. Get over your fear of failure and replace it with the desire to succeed.
Instead of draining your energy fearing of failure, have a strong will to success and have
faith that there is nothing called failure; we either succeed or learn.
  5. Stop comparing yourself to others, instead, learn from their experiences.

We are different, and everyone is gifted with a different set of skills, abilities, and talents that make him/her different from others. Learn from the steps of the successful people instead of comparing yourself to them especially while you are starting.Ask yourself are you getting closer to what you want to achieve? Compare your today to your yesterday.

Do not compare page 1 of your book with page 10 of someone else’s book instead make sure you are progressing in your own book.

  6. Surround yourself with positive people
Surround yourself with positive people who uplift you, always remind you about your uniqueness, challenge you to be better and inspire you to go forward.,Stay away from the negative and critiquing people who drain your energy and cause you to feel trapped and overwhelmed.
  7. Explore your talents and abilities that make you exceptional at your business.
Identify your talents, strengths and strong capabilities that make you exceptional at your business, and decide how could you use these skills and talents to reach your future goals.
  8. Keep yourself motivated.
When you stretch yourself to your limits, your limits expand. Sometimes we think we can’t go for difficult tasks or for things we are not familiar withProve to yourself that you can go for any challenge, develop new skills that would help you to succeed, and keep yourself motivated.
